You Already Have Your Summer Body
Summer's here—and so are the ads telling you to "fix" your body. But what if you didn’t need to fix anything to feel confident right now?
I understand the sentiment behind "getting your summer body," but framing things this way can make you miss out on year-round body confidence.
Working on appearance goals is totally valid—and it’s important to know that confidence doesn’t have to be delayed until you reach them. You can feel good in your body now, even as you work toward change. Why? Because confidence has more to do with body image than appearance.
What Is Body Image?
Body image is more than just how you look—it’s how you relate to your body across four key areas:
Perception – What you see in the mirror and how your brain processes that image.
Thoughts – What you think about your body. These thoughts often include judgments, like:
“My body is amazing.”
“My body is hideous.”
“I need to build more muscle before I take my shirt off.”
“I appreciate all that my body does for me.”
Feelings – Emotions tied to your body image, such as confidence, pride, insecurity, or discouragement.
Behaviors – The actions you take based on how you feel about your body: mirror checking, posture, what you wear, etc.
If you’re trying to feel more confident in your body this summer, take a few minutes to reflect on how each of these areas shows up for you. Awareness is the first step to meaningful change.
